https://gamerant.com/first-final-fantasy-14-tabletop-rpg-set/Square Enix pulls back the curtain on the Final Fantasy series' first tabletop RPG set to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Final Fantasy 14.
As Final Fantasy 14 celebrates the tenth anniversary of its rebirth, Square Enix announced that a new tabletop RPG (TTRPG) set based in the world of Eorzea is in the works. The upcoming Final Fantasy 14 Tabletop RPG will be the first officially licensed TTRPG released by Square Enix and will feature books, character sheets, dice, and other tabletop supplies to get players started.
This new announcement is just the latest to commemorate the relaunch of Final Fantasy 14 as A Realm Reborn in 2013. Between a special quest that takes place during Final Fantasy 14's annual Rising event in-game, and the upcoming release of Patch 6.5, Growing Light, the development team for Final Fantasy 14 has not stopped finding ways to keep players engaged until the launch of the Dawntrail expansion. However, the announcement of a new product is one way to catch the attention of fans, including one that will be a first for the Final Fantasy series.
According to Square Enix, the Final Fantasy 14 Tabletop RPG will be released in May 2024. Preorders are now available on the Square Enix Store, starting at $59.99. The box art for the Final Fantasy 14 Tabletop RPG featured several races from the critically acclaimed MMORPG, with a pair of Roegadyn and a Hyur Midlander featured front and center. Characters from other races such as the Lalafell and Miqo'te were shown throughout the artwork as well. The Final Fantasy 14 TTRPG Starter Set will include 16 dice (6d20 and 10d6), premade character sheets based on Jobs such as the Warrior and the Black Mage, an encounter map, and some markers and books for players and game masters to use during the course of the game.
Square Enix stated that the Final Fantasy 14 TTRPG Starter Set is intended for three to five players, and recommended a set of five players. In addition to the starter set, a rule book and a game master guide will be available for purchase at a later date. At the time of writing, it is not clear if the Final Fantasy 14 Tabletop RPG will use proprietary rules, or if it will borrow from established rule sets such as Pathfinder or an edition of Dungeons and Dragons.
Given the commercial success of Dungeons and Dragons, as well as games such as Baldur's Gate 3 and the web series Critical Role, the tabletop RPG genre is showing no signs of slowing down. Only time will tell if the Final Fantasy 14 Tabletop RPG will catch on with fans of both the Final Fantasy series and tabletop RPGs.
Final Fantasy 14 is available now for PC, PS4, and PS5, with an Xbox Series X/S version launching in Spring 2024.
