the Nintendo Direct didn't have any exciting reveals. One of the more surprising announcements to come from the Nintendo Direct was the reveal of Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered, a collection of the first three Tomb Raider games and all of their original expansions.While Tomb Raider fans have been begging for a remaster of the original trilogy for ages now, most had all but given up hope, and the last place they probably expected to see an announcement was a Nintendo Direct. But while
Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered is a dream come true for many long-time fans, it doesn't necessarily guarantee a purchase. It all comes down to just how much Aspyr is charging for the Tomb Raider collection.
Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered Needs to be Priced Fairly
The Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered collection has the potential to be one of the best retro compilations in gaming history. While the Tomb Raider franchise has remained popular since its debut all the way back in 1996, the vast majority of the series' current fans likely only know the game from
Crystal Dynamics' recent Tomb Raider reboot series. This collection gives them the opportunity to finally dive into the first three original games in the series and see just how far Lara Croft has come in the last 27 years.From the little revealed so far, Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered looks like a pretty complete collection. Not only does this collection include
all three original Tomb Raider games, but it also comes with their various expansions. That means Tomb Raider 1's Unfinished Business expansion, Tomb Raider 2's The Golden Mask, and Tomb Raider 3's The Lost Artifact are all included in this compilation, along with all the series' secret levels, giving both fans and newcomers the complete Tomb Raider trilogy experience.Of course, as the name would suggest, Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered also features some shiny new high-res graphics. Though the environmental textures will still look just as jagged as ever, the details on those textures have been revamped, and Lara's character model has been given a big update, smoothing out some of her dated edges. Players will be able to swap graphical styles on the fly, however, returning the game to its classic polygonal art style with just the press of a button. It's currently unclear if any other elements of the game have been remastered or updated, such as
the original trilogy's tank controls, so fans will just need to wait and see. And that's not the only thing they'll need to wait and see about.Currently, at the time of writing, there's no price available for
Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered on Nintendo Switch, or any other platform that the collection may be appearing on. Though it might seem a bit dramatic to say, this unknown price point could genuinely make or break the Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered collection. While getting the original Tomb Raider trilogy and all of its expansions remastered and available on modern platforms is something that fans have wanted for a long time now, it's not quite worth a full $60, especially if it doesn't include any actual gameplay tweaks or updates, which it likely won't. Instead, a $30-40 price tag seems much more reasonable for a collection like this, and it is definitely the way to go if Aspyr wants to bring in newcomers to the series.Tomb Raider: 1-2-3 Remastered launches February 24 for Nintendo Switch.
